How to Start a Club

Become part of a global network that advances maritime commerce!

Why Start a New Port?

Launching a local Port of the International Propeller Club brings your maritime community into a respected, global network. Your Port can:

  • Host local networking events and forums
  • Advocate for maritime industry priorities
  • Offer scholarships and educational programs
  • Connect with other Ports nationally and internationally
  • Participate in our Annual Convention and key industry events
  1. Contact Sam Malone
  2. Form a Leadership Team
    • Identify 5–6 individuals to serve as officers, including:
      • President
      • Vice President (ideally a future President)
      • Secretary and Treasurer (may be combined)
    • Strong leadership and succession planning are vital.
  3. Build Interest
    • Engage at least 25 members from your local maritime community.
    • Promote the club through industry contacts, businesses, schools, and government agencies.
  4. Host an Introductory Event
    • A cocktail reception or informal meeting works well to introduce the concept and recruit members.
  5. Draft Bylaws
    • Ensure compliance with local laws and ensure that they are consistent with our International Bylaws
    • Use this naming format:
The International Propeller Club, Port of [City]
    • Include leadership election procedures and define the relationship with the international organization.
  6. Set Dues & Finances
    • Establish membership dues to cover:
      • International dues
      • Local operations
    • Open a dedicated bank account with two signatories (typically managed by the President and Secretary/Treasurer)
    • Ensure annual audits by designated members
  7. Apply for a Charter

Submit the following to International Headquarters:
    • Letter of application
    • Initial membership roster (names, emails, officer roles)
    • Bylaws
    • Once approved by our Board of Directors, you’ll pay a one-time $1,000 charter fee, which covers your “starter kit”:
    • 25 Propeller Club membership pins
    • President’s pin
    • Banner with your Port’s name
  8. Join the Network
    • After your first year, your Port will be billed annually for international dues.
    • You’ll gain access to a vast network of Ports, events, leadership programs, and advocacy opportunities.

We exist to:

  • Support the merchant marine and all related industries
  • Promote maritime commerce, education, and career development
  • Advocate for smart investments in waterways and infrastructure
  • Foster international trade and cooperation
  • Advance public understanding of maritime importance
  • Unite the maritime community with friendship and purpose
