Port of Port Manatee, Florida

On May 21st, the Port Manatee Propeller Club proudly recognized its annual scholarship awardees, continuing a longstanding tradition of supporting the next generation of maritime professionals.

This year’s celebration carried special significance, as the Club also honored the inaugural recipients of its newly established U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Sponsorship Program. The first recipients of this prestigious sponsorship, Nina Dotres and Caitlin Le Nguyen, were formally introduced and recognized for their outstanding achievements and commitment to maritime service. Both individuals have been selected to receive a four-year sponsorship, designed to assist in covering expenses associated with their education at the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

This new sponsorship initiative reflects the Club’s deep commitment to fostering future leaders within the maritime industry. By providing sustained financial and professional support, the program ensures that promising cadets can focus on their academic and leadership development while preparing for service to the nation and the global maritime community.

During the event, Bill Wheeler, a proud USMMA alumnus and active participant in the Academy’s applicant screening program, addressed attendees and highlighted the importance of the Club’s investment in maritime education. As part of his remarks, Wheeler presented a formal letter from Rear Admiral Anthony J. Ceraolo, Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

In his letter, Admiral Ceraolo commended the Port Manatee Propeller Club for its forward-thinking initiative, stating: “Your sponsorship program supporting the education and development of the next generation of maritime leaders is indicative of your steadfast commitment to the maritime profession.” His message underscored the broader impact of the Club’s efforts—not only benefiting individual cadets but strengthening the maritime workforce as a whole. The May 21st event served as both a celebration and a milestone, marking the continuation of the Club’s scholarship tradition while launching a transformative new program that will shape maritime leadership for years to come.

The Port Manatee Propeller Club remains dedicated to its mission of promoting the maritime industry, supporting education, and investing in those who will carry the profession forward. With the introduction of the USMMA Sponsorship Program and the recognition of this year’s scholarship recipients, the Club has once again demonstrated its enduring commitment to excellence and service.
